From the inside cover….
Michael White (1948-2008), one of the founders of narrative therapy, was an outspoken voice and leading light for therapists and clinicians around the world. From complete, polished papers that White presented at conferences to unfinished papers, interviews and paragraphs of “thoughts,” Narrative Practice: Continuing the Conversations presents the sharp, compassionate, and elegant writing White left behind, none of it ever before published.
White’s social, political, and ethical concerns were formative of his therapeutic approach, and he explores each of them, eloquently and in detail, with regard to topics near and dear to the psychotherapeutic world: the effects of modern power, turning points in therapy, personal and community ethics, countertransference, resistance, rich story development, and therapist responsibility. He offers wisdom on particular therapeutic challenges as well, advocating for the narrative responses to perpetrators of violence, survivors of trauma, those suffering from anorexia, families who have lost loved ones to suicide, and couples in therapy.
Narrative Practice is a rich and unique resource for clinicians who wish to critically examine their approach to therapy, or learn about the transformative power and practical applications of narrative therapy. Though this book contains the final writings by Michael White, it also continues the conversations he so brilliantly began decades ago.
