Text Box: Jodi Aman lives and works in Rochester, New York. She is the founder of the Center for Narrative Practice, an independent family therapy, community work and narrative practice training facility. She meets with people of all ages who consult her about a variety of predicaments in their lives. She has many special interests: working with couples, young children experiencing anxiety or sadness after a loss or trauma, families in transition of separation or re- partnering and meeting with refugees and war veterans and their families. Jodi joined the Dulwich Centre Teaching Faculty in 2007 to become a tutor on the Dulwich Centre International Narrative Therapy Training Program.

Narrative Therapy with Couples

Jodi will illustrate how Narrative Therapy has informed her work with couples. Couple counselling can be daunting when couples often enter therapy in high conflict. Jodi will explore skills in "double listening" in responding to conflict and how such skills assist stories of love, compassion and sharing to emerge.

Participants will develop skills in using the maps of narrative therapy with couples through watching and discussing videos and engaging in practice exercises around the following concepts:

 

· Conflict dissolution

· Positively implicating partners

· Externalizing relationship arrangements

· Exploring actions, intentions, responsibility and respect

· Helping partners be curious about what is 'absent but implicit' in their partner's expressions

· Navigating discourses of power and abuse

· Repositioning one partner as an outsider witness

· Acknowledgment practices
