Text Box: Narrative Therapy with children and adolescents

This workshop will be of interest to children’s mental health workers, school workers, social workers, C.A.S. workers, private therapists, psychologists, child and youth workers and anyone working with children and adolescents. It will be suitable for those new to narrative ideas, and also for practitioners who have familiarity and experience with narrative ideas. There will be an emphasis of putting narrative therapy and collective ideas into practice. Throughout the workshop there will be an exploration of creative possibilities to difficult problems such as temper, worry, trauma and depression.

In this workshop participants will learn:
How to engage in externalizing conversations and use playful approaches to serious problems
How to scaffold questions so young people can answer them
About the importance of subordinate storyline development in conversations with children and teens who have been subject to abuse/trauma
How to engage in re-authoring conversations which move Problem stories to Preferred stories of young people’s live and identities

Both workshops will include experiential exercises, didactic theory, video and sharing the micro maps of narrative practices. The 2-day workshop in Toronto will include
an additional segment on working with families and further opportunity
for narrative skills development exercises.
